Filipinos who have bought the iPhone have unlocked the gadget so they can use it even without an account from exclusive US distributor AT&T Corp. A National Telecommunications Commission official warned that doing so is illegal.
An iPhone owner, Sophia (not her real name), said she is able to use the gadget after unlocking it using a “special SIM card.”
The iPhone, released by Apple Inc. in the United States last June 29, combines the features of a mobile phone, iPod music player, digital camera, Internet communications device, and personal digital assistant.
The iPhone is not yet available in the Philippines and is expected to be sold locally only by 2008. It is not yet known if a local mobile phone company has acquired rights to sell the gadget.
Sophia said she bought her iPhone, which costs $500-600, in the US the day it was launched.“I had planned to get an AT&T account but some computer experts were right away able to find a way so it could at least be used as an iPod and camera,” she said. The iPhone owner said she learned recently at a forum of the Philippine Macintosh Users Group (Philmug) claimed to have unlocked the iPhone using a “special SIM card.”She immediately tried it and can now use the iPhone to make calls and send messages.“It comes with a special SIM from AT&T. There’s a process (to make it work in the country),” Sophia said. The NTC warned it is illegal to clone or unlock a SIM card although they admit the practice is rampant in the Philippines.“If the contract between the telco and subscriber tells the user not to ‘open’ the SIM card, there may be a violation there,” NTC deputy commissioner Jorge Sarmiento. He pointed out that no telecommunications company has yet complained against the unlocking of the iPhone. The first teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.he’s George Hotz, of Glen Rock, New Jersey, said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Kentucky-based mobile phone repair company.Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for ”a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones.
